A question that gets asked a lot is if you can remove bad reviews off of TripAdvisor and, if so, how. Before we begin, it is important that you realize that not all bad reviews can be removed, but some can and we are happy to help you how to identify reviews that qualify for removal.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to remove bad reviews from TripAdvisor.

The first thing you need to do, of course, is to check your account review and have them scored by us. We provide Objection Scores on how likely a bad review can be removed (0-5).

TripAdvisor will remove specific bad reviews if they contain certain negative comments and/or information. For example, the following are some of the reasons the site will remove content:

  •      if a consumer uses vulgarity or profanity, it will be removed almost immediately upon being reported. TripAdvisor is a family-friendly site and, as such, requires that reviews be so as well.
  •      Bullying, threats, and/or personal insults will not be allowed, either. If the review contains any of the previous types of language, the site will remove it.
  •      Intolerant language, where the reviewer expresses harmful opinions, will also not be allowed and will be removed by TripAdvisor staff. For example, any personal thoughts concerning sexual orientation, race, religion, politics, and other such topics are off-limits.
  •      Information that is not relevant to the vendor will be removed as well. Sometimes people like to blame the business for the rain or complain about a spa that was located in the same building but is not associated with the hotel in which they stayed. In addition, some consumers use the review section for asking questions of the owner or other travelers. This type of “review” will also be taken down.
  •      TripAdvisor will not tolerate blackmail or bias reviews. For example, if an ex-employee leaves a bad review; it will be removed. If a competitor leaves a nasty remark; it will be removed. TripAdvisor only wants honest opinions with truthful reviews.
  •      Old reviews can be removed if they are over a year old, especially if the guest’s stay or visit was a year ago and he or she is just now getting around to leaving a bad review. If it was that bad, he or she would have left it immediately after leaving. More than likely, it is someone looking for a free night’s stay. Check your system to be sure of when the person visited your establishment.
  •      Another thing that TripAdvisor will not tolerate is rumors. Reviews must be based on actual visits to the business and not made up, whether negative or positive. Second-hand knowledge may also be removed, such as “I did not eat there, but my mother did and…” No, that is not allowed, either.

If a review has any of the previous types of content that violates their rules, TripAdvisor will remove the review for you. All you have to do is to report it by following these guidelines:

  1. First, go to the Business Management Center. You can find that here at http://tripadvisor.com/owners
  2. Next, you will see the Reviews tab, select “Report a Review” by clicking on it.
  3.  Lastly, simply fill the form out, explaining why you feel the review should be removed.
  4.  Once you have completed these guidelines, someone from the site will read your report and decide whether or not the review is in violation of their guidelines. If it is, the review will be taken down.

For reviews that score low, or don’t qualify for removal you need to be sure to respond quickly.
